Writing the talisman is only half the equation. To make the talisman work requires the intervention of spirits to bless and empower the symbols. If this does not occur, then the talisman will not emit any spiritual light and will just be a useless piece of paper with some strange Chinese symbols on it.

Before making and consecrating a talisman, you should put on some clean clothes, wash your body, hands and clean your teeth; light some incense and finally tell the deities the purpose of the talisman.

For the talisman to be successful you must ensure that the following conditions are met:

1. Make sure you use the correct symbols. Sun, moon, stars, spirit, ghosts, gods all require a different routine when creating the talisman. Each stroke is a communication or bridge between the spiritual and material worlds. 2. You must be totally respectful of the spiritual forces involved. 3. The area where you are preparing the talisman should be clean and quiet.

4. You must not smoke drink alcohol, or have sex prior to writing the talisman.

5. For some talismans you need to abstain from eating meat for a few days before writing the talisman.

6. When you actually come to write the talisman, you need to be relaxed with a clear, positive mind.
